We named him Astro because he was abandoned and saved the day the Houston Astros won the World Series. His injuries are severe but his spirit and determination to live are unstoppable.
Check out this great video
Astro was found sitting in the middle of the road, scared. He was not hit by a car, ha had just wondered out there looking for the people who abandoned him. He was already damaged when he was dumped.
Astro is a sweet 5 month old husky/malamute puppy. You would not know he has a debilitating injury until he stands up to walk. We aren't sure exactly what happened, but based on his fur pressed down in a circular path around his hips (just above his hind legs) - it seems that an unforgiving object was wrapped around his pelvis since he was much smaller and he grew with the compressed conditions.
His hip bones are squeezed together and both of his femoral heads are shattered. One vet says it was, in-fact from blunt trauma, but the fact that he doesn't seem to show pain is unexplainable. He is having trouble controlling his bladder and we are hoping it can be repaired as well.
Many things to consider because we are not opposed to humanely euthanizing a dog if they have a poor prognosis and quality of life. Astro is able to urinate and defecate without any issues. One look at Astro's sweet face and his playful nature tells us that he has a life to live and people to entertain!
He needs double Femoral Head Osteotomy (FHO) surgery. This is where the ball at the top of the femur is shaved down and bone fragments are removed.
After a 6-8 week recovery, he should be a much better "aligned" puppy!
Times are extremely tough right now for rescue organizations. This is a large added expense when we have 2 other huskies in recovery from orthopedic surgery with outstanding balances.
He will eventually be searching for his forever home.
Right now, the priority is getting this sweet puppy in orthopedic surgery.
