I Lost a Pet!

What to Do if You Lost Your Dog

If your dog is missing, begin your search on Petco Love Lost.

Remember: you're searching for the person who's found or spotted your pet, so getting the word out is key.

Check to make sure your dog's microchip information is up to date so the person that finds your pet can reach you quickly if they're brought to a shelter or veterinarian's office and scanned.

Check the animal Shelters!

Print flyers! For an easy flyer template you can print at home, upload your pet to Petco Love Lost and visit your dashboard to print your pet listing. You can also use Petco Love Lost's optimized shareables to get the word out on Facebook, Next-door, and Craigslist.

Post on social media through lost pet pages or groups on platforms like Facebook or Nextdoor, and ask others to share and spread the word. We have many social media groups you can post to:

I Found a Pet!

What to Do if You Find a Dog or Cat

If you live in Texas and found a loose/stray dog or cat, you might think a quick call or visit to your local shelter will take care of the issue.  Sadly, this is no longer the case! The shelters in Texas are at critical capacity. If you call animal control to report that you have found a dog or cat - they will likely tell you to leave it be.  If you collected the dog or cat, they might give you advice...take it back where you found it! This is the result of an overpopulation crises of dogs and cats in Texas!

It is not your responsibility to spend hours and hours searching for an owner - especially if they are not looking for their pet.  If you are an animal lover, you are likely sitting in your car with a strange dog, feeling hopeless.  The best-case scenario is that someone will be looking for the pet you found and you can reunite them and go home happy!

VERY IMPORTANT: DO NOT hand a pet over to anyone who says it is their pet! Ask for proof such as vet records and recent photographs! Do not provide your address or phone number on public/social media forums. For location, you can use cross-streets.

Here's some suggestions:

Look for ID tags if it is safe and at your own risk

Check for tags on the pet’s collar and look for contact information. If there are no tags, take them to a Petco, vet, or shelter to scan for a microchip.

Report the pet you found on Petco Love Lost with a photo to make the pet visible to pet parents searching for their lost pet.

Get social

Speak with neighbors and anyone else in the area who might know who owns the pet.

Thousands of Texas dogs and cats are stray. We believe that joining social media groups to post a dog you have found is the best tool from our experience. When doing this, state that you are searching for a rescue group!  Contacting a rescue organization is a good idea, but rescues in Texas are overwhelmed with too many dogs and cats.

We have created a list of social media resources below:

Food Pantries

Houston Pets Alive

No one should have to choose between feeding themselves or their best friend.
Our donation-based Pet Food Pantry ensures that pet owners can access essential pet items while contributing what they can in return. Please register prior to arriving.

 How It Works:

  • Register Prior to Arrival: Please register before arriving at our Pet Pantry to ensure we’re ready to assist you and your pets.
  • Pay-What-You-Can:  Residents take the food they need and donate any amount they can afford in return.
  • Volunteer Operated:  The pantry is run by dedicated volunteers and open every Saturday from 10am – 1pm at 2800 Antoine #2854, Houston 77092.

Houston Humane Society's

Pet Pantry supports Houston residents in caring for their pets by providing free pet food and supplies. The COVID-19 pandemic has deeply affected the Houston community causing pet owners to experience financial difficulties. Via the creation of our Pet Resources programs, we keep pets and families together.

Their Pet Resources program provides assistance to the community in multiple ways: public Pet Pantry events across the Greater Houston area, an application-based Monthly Assistance Program, New Home New Start, Fix Felix and Friends For Free, and assisting those who are experiencing homelessness.

Low Cost Vets

Spay and Neuter are the key to animal population control in Houston. But at a typical vet, this can be very expensive. If your dog does not have any special issues (such as chryptorchid testicles or fibroid tumors) that may require a specialist, try these low cost spay and neuter clinics in the greater  Houston Area.

The City of Houston and Houston PetSet are currently offering free spay/neuter, vaccines and microchips to City of Houston residents. Click for all the details

Houston Animal Shelters With Low Cost Spay and Neuter

In addition to those listed above, you should check with your local animal control or shelter about free or low cost spay and neuter.

For example, both City of Houston BARC and Harris County’s Harris County Pets Resource Center will regularly post spay/neuter days on their social media. Both will post on Wednesday mornings for spay/neuter openings on Saturday. To get one of these free or low cost spay and neuter appointments, you have to be quick to the phone! But following these pages and knowing when they are posted helps.

The Empty Shelter Project Houston offers free spay and neuter in coordination with the City of Houston and other municipalities. These events typically spay and neuter 150-300 animals in a single day, and focus on lower income areas. Events are promoted via social media in the community. Follow your local community center or town government for information and eligibility.

 What to Expect

The veterinarian will begin by introducing themselves and discussing the process with you. They may ask if you have any questions and if there are specific details you would like to address.

  • Sedation (First Injection): - The first injection is a sedative. This injection helps relax your pet, making them calm and drowsy. The goal is to ensure your pet is comfortable and peaceful before proceeding with the euthanasia solution.
  • Time Alone: - After the sedation is administered, the veterinarian will offer you time alone with your pet. This allows you to say your final goodbyes in a quiet and private setting.
  • Euthanasia Solution (Second Injection): - Once you and your pet are ready, the veterinarian will administer the second injection, which is the euthanasia solution. This solution acts quickly to stop the heart and bring about a peaceful passing.
  • Aftercare Options: - Once your pet's euthanasia appointment has completed, we confirm your pre-arranged aftercare preferences with the veterinarian.
