Right now, shelters all over Texas are completely full. Rescue Texas is no exception. We rely heavily on foster homes to house our rescue population and we’re looking for more Foster Heroes to join our team! If you’ve been considering fostering a rescue dog, here are the top 10 reasons fostering is worth it!
If you love the idea of a pet, but you’re not sure if adopting a pet fits into your schedule and lifestyle long term, fostering a pet temporarily can help give you a better sense of what works for you. Some of our fosters don’t have pets of their own because of their work and travel schedules, but foster for a few weeks here and there when they can. That way they can experience the joy of a pet’s love without disrupting their careers or other interests.
Kids can benefit a lot from fostering! It’s a great way to test out if your kids are ready for the responsibility of a pet while they learn about what goes into caring for an animal.
The memories you create with your foster pet will last a lifetime. You’ll learn more about yourself as you learn more about animals and best of all, you’ll have the cutest pictures and stories to share at your next get together. Fostering is also a great conversation starter when meeting new people or going out on a first date.
Rescue Texas provides all of the food, supplies, medical and behavioral care your foster pet needs while in your care. You just provide the love – we provide the rest!
Not all of us have consistent time to commit to going somewhere to volunteer. Well, fostering is volunteering from the comfort of your home! Every time someone takes a foster pet into their home, they make room for another pet in need at our rescue. You can make a huge impact for animals in your community by fostering. The feeling you get from saving a life and supporting the community is priceless.
Thanks for being interested in fostering! To foster an animal for us, you must be over the age of 25. All dogs/cats currently in the household must be up to date on vaccinations and be spayed/neutered (unless there are medical reasons or they are under 6 months old).
If you have a landlord, their consent and knowledge are required in writing or one of our representatives must speak to them over the phone or in person. We expect you to keep the foster pet on heartworm/flea prevention monthly (which we provide).
You must remain in good contact with one of our representatives. You must not allow the foster pet to leave your possession without the approval of a representative. You must agree to foster this pet at your own risk, and release all Rescue Texas Resources members from any liability arising from damages to property/people caused by said pet.
If you are approved to be a foster, please understand that there is an adoption process that must be followed. Fosters are encouraged to seek new homes, but fosters are not allowed to give or offer their foster to anyone without prior approval from Rescue Texas.
You must take your foster pet to vet appointments made by us (any unauthorized appointments will NOT be reimbursed). If you are unable to get your foster to a vet appointment, we will try to find a ride if we are given enough notice. You must keep your foster pet indoors as a household companion and keep the pet on a leash when outside in a non-secure area. Your foster pet should never be left unsupervised, especially around young children.
Any unauthorized appointments will NOT be reimbursed.
At this or any other time during the process, if the Foster agrees to keep the animal as a pet, the Foster will assume all costs and responsibilities associated with the pet and its care. The adoption fee is required when fosters adopt.
